panda-penguin-link-buildingGoogle has been consistently working hard to maintain its reputation as the world’s leading search engine.

First it was the Panda and now it is the Penguin update. The Google Penguin sets more stringent rules for any page that wishes to be ranked. The launch of the original Penguin resulted in tremendous confusion among SEO experts because the adjustments resulted in drastic falls in rankings.

With its latest update released earlier this year, Google Penguin 2.0 aims to track down websites that employ black-hat SEO techniques and eventually penalize them for it. So far, most SEO experts feel that the easiest way to survive these changes is by making your website more compelling and worth visiting over and over.

How to Survive Penguin 2.0

1.      Focusing on Integrating Natural or Real Links

With the latest update in Google’s search algorithms, you must focus all your attention on integrating natural or real links. It is also important that you set real link parameters. Avoid buying and creating links from websites that are not related to yours.

Also, avoid building links that lead to your target page but are “spammy” in nature or come with little integrity. Also, it is best to keep your link optimization exercise under control by being conservative about the use of anchor texts and unnatural link-baiting. We will discuss this in more detail below.

2.      Acquiring a Deeper Understanding of the Nature and Profile of your Website

If you are having a tough time accomplishing this on your own, make use of applications which help you in achieving brand integration. There are applications which help identify external pages which can be legitimately linked to your website. This can help you save time and assist in performing a quick analysis of the pages and domains that link back to your website.

You can also find applications that help detect low-quality links that have a negative impact on your page rankings. It is important that you perform regular clean-ups to get rid of all bad links.

3.      Creating Valuable Relationships Online

No amount of link-buying can help you with creating meaningful relationships online. If you wish to survive Penguin 2.0, it is important that you develop partnerships with relevant sites that are known to offer quality content. One meaningful back-link is always more effective than ten that are irrelevant. Strategic online partnerships are a great way to fight all kinds of algorithmic changes. Even if more Penguins are introduced on the search engine, your valuable relationships are here to stay.

4.      Removing the Spammy Pages from your Website

In addition to getting rid of external links that take you to spammy content, it is also important that you maintain a certain amount of vigilance with respect to internal cleaning of your own pages on a regular basis.

5.      Implementing a New Campaign for Inbound Link-Building

Consider starting from scratch with respect to your link-building campaign. Associate with only those pages that have won Google’s trust. This can prove to be quite helpful in improving your search ranking.

In spite of all the confusion and chaos around Google’s Penguin 2.0, it is a fact that these updates come in good faith. It is the aim of Google to make sure that Internet users are able to gain access to high-quality content every time they log on. It is thus important that, as an online marketer, you play by the rules and focus on quality.

Blog2Creating a successful blog requires writing new posts on a consistent basis. On top of that, the posts have to be interesting, unique, and compelling. You can’t just phone it in and expect it to land with your customers.

Yet constantly coming up with ideas for new posts that meet all those criteria can be a challenge. You can fall prey to writer’s block or to simple routine. Finding ways to stay inspired is essential to helping you keep your blog interesting and to make it successful.

When you’re feeling stuck in a rut with your blogging routine, here are a few tips to help you feel inspired to write the best articles you can every day:

Read Blogs You Love

Reading other blogs that we love and admire can be just the trick to remind us why we started blogging in the first place. It can also help us to see issues in a new light and to find inspiration for new content.

Maybe a blogger you like suggests a provocative change of policy. You might write a rebuttal. Or maybe a blogger you like will write a post that teaches you something new. You may now have a whole new area of discussion to explore.

You never know what others may inspire you to write. Make it a habit to read your favorite bloggers — or writers — every day.

Carry a Notebook

You never know when inspiration will strike. Carry a notebook to make sure you’re ready when it does.

Keep a notebook to jot down ideas for posts, bits of information you want to explore, a few lines that you want to include in a post, or any other information that occurs to you that you might be able to use on your blog later.

Whenever you are short on ideas, you can refer to the notebook for inspiration.

Take Breaks

Sometimes even the things you love can start to seem like work when you do them all the time or when you feel pressured to complete them in order to meet a goal.

When you reach this place with your blogging, it might be time to take a break in order to recharge and remind yourself why you love blogging.

Your break does not have to be a long one.

You can take a day off or even a week.

You can put your blog on pause during that time, or you can fill it with guest posts while you are gone.

Taking the time off can help you to get a fresh perspective and to come back to your blogging with new energy and new passion.

Do Other Things You Love

A break doesn’t always have to be a literal one. Sometimes, you just need a mental break.

Step away from your computer and spend some time doing something else you love to do, such as read a book, see a movie, or exercise with a friend.

Doing other things you enjoy will re-energize you and help you to reset your focus.

You may find that the change of mental scenery inspires you, or it may just give you the energy you need to return to you work and to brainstorm new ideas.

Blogging can be hard work.

The daily grind of it can start to be tedious and rob you of your inspiration.

When you are feeling like you just don’t have any new ideas or anymore energy to find them, try a few of these tips to get inspired and to try again.

TopLinkBuildingStrategiesThis article is for new websites on the assumption that new websites will not have any previous web presence and do not yet have an online presence. Organic links come from other people, and are often due to a website’s online reputation, its use, its popularity and its current content.

As a new website you will not be able to leverage any of these factors (at least not in the early stages), which is why all of the tips on this article can be actioned straight away.

Article sites

These are sites that allow you to upload articles and link from them. They do not have a massive page rank, but do still offer links that Google and the others will pay attention to. Many of them do not have very strict rules about content. Some of them do not even check your content for accuracy. There are a lot of them, so try to find ones that are popular.

Guest blogging

You can post a guest blog post on someone else’s blog/website. They get free content for their blog and you get a link. The only problem is that the more popular the blog is then the less likely they are to allow you to guest post on their blog. However, there are so many of these sites that you can upload a fair amount of content if you do not mind a fair amount of rejection before getting what you want.

Asking your friends to link to you

If your friends have blogs and websites then ask them to link to you every now and again. You can swap links with them for a mutual SEO benefit. Your friends are less likely to ask for things in return for links, and are less likely to tell you to go away when you ask for a link. This could work to your benefit if your friends have high-ranking websites or blogs.

Cross website linking

If you have more than one website or blog then you have no excuse for not cross-linking them up. You can link them as many times as you like, but be aware that Google may not like it if you link from too many pages (it may be seen as over optimization).

Blogging

Setting up your own blog, adding to it, maintaining it and growing it is a hard task. However, you can add some very targeted content onto your blog and link it to your website for an SEO boost. If your plan is to set up and run a blog anyway, then you have little excuse for not linking from it. You do not have to link from every post. But do try to link from the pages that are related to your websites content.

Social media begging

Go on social media and whine, beg or coerce. People will tell you that this method is ineffective and will get you a bad name, but so many people are doing it, that there has to be something in it.

Forums

Linking from Google-followed forums is not a bad idea if you go about it the right way. Firstly, you can fail if the forum is not followed by Google, because no amount of links will make a difference. The second way you can fail is if you tick-off the forum master and have week’s worth of posts removed.

DisavowLinksGoogle ramped up its fight against spam by releasing its new Disavow Links tool.

Announced at the Las Vegas Pubcon convention, this new tool allows webmasters – those that have a Google Webmasters Account – to report and possibly get rid of bad or spammy links to their website, links that could be hurting their SEO rankings.

These links are reviewed by Google and, if found to be spam, could face removal from Google search results.

While Google recommends the use of Disavow Links only in last-resort situations, it could do a lot to improve the web as a whole, cutting down on bad SEO practices, improving search results for users and helping webmasters improve their own organic search rankings.

What it is

The Disavow Links tool is essentially a reporting system for bad URLs and links. Essentially, webmasters are able to submit a list of links to their site that they believe are spam, unnatural, disreputable or otherwise bad, and Google will consider removing  them from search results. Typically, removing bad links will take at least a few weeks.

The tool is intended to be the final straw in a webmasters’ attempt to have a bad link removed. Google recommends contacting the webmaster of the spam link’s domain to request removal before using the Disavow Links tool.

Disavow Links was likely created in response to Google’s latest Penguin algorithm update which, instead of turning its head to bad or spammy links when determining a site’s search ranking, actually uses those links as a strike against the site.

Why to use it

Many websites have been hurt by the Penguin update. Past link building campaigns may have resulted in a number of URLs and links that now hurt, rather than help, the site’s ranking in Google. The Disavow Links tool offers a road to a clean slate for those websites.

Whether the links were the result of a bad SEO practitioner on behalf of the site itself, or if they were paid links, the Disavow Links tool can help remove those is webmasters are unable to leverage the removal themselves.

The tool can also help if webmasters believe someone may be creating negative SEO against them, either to hurt a business or to direct traffic away to another site.

Additionally, Disavow Links can help clean up a site’s image in search results. Users will no longer see confusing or spam-related links when searching, links that could affect their view of the site or its reputation.

How to use it

To use the Disavow Links tool, you first must have a Google Webmasters account.

From there, you’ll need to select your website and upload a text file. The file should list each individual URL you’d like to see removed or investigated on a separate line – no commas, or semicolons.

If you’d like to have a whole domain removed, you simply need to use “domain:XX.com,” instead of a direct URL.

According to Google, it could be a number of weeks before links are removed and, even then, there’s no guarantee they will be. Google reserves the right to use its own judgment in removing links from search results.

Google representatives say it’s important to be careful when using the Disavow Links tool. Accidentally disavowing an important link to your site could severely affect site health and, while the links can be reinstated upon request, it could take another few weeks for the process to be complete.

ExternalLinkingWhen SEO people are talking about links – most of the time they will talk about backlinks. But you can also use your external links to improve your site.

So what are external links? Its links from your website that links outside your own domain to other websites on the internet.

Some people are afraid of using them.

They think “if people click away from my website I will never see them again – so I better not link to an outside domain”.

Other people are thinking “what if the website I am linking to is a spammy or bad website – then I might be punished by the search engines”.

And you will also find people that have the idea that “I should never link to a website that has a lower PageRank than mine”.

With external links you will provide your readers with in-depth information about the topic you are writing about. You can also write your own unique commentary on existing resources.

But if I Use External Linking I will Never See the Reader Again
Well you will have to rethink if you are among these people. When you are using external links you will provide your readers with a lot of information and references and this will show to the reader that your site has credible information.

And we all know that a credible website is a website that the readers will return to in the future to get more information – right?

What is the alternative for the reader?

Well if the reader doesn’t find the information he or she needs on your website – the person will just go on Google, Bing or Yahoo and find the wanted information elsewhere. So when not help your reader with credible information.

You don’t have to link to your competitors – even though the reader might find them anyway.

You can start by linking to great technical people, scientists’ people, bibliographies, Wikipedia, white papers, journal entries.

When you link to websites like these it will show that you know your product or business. And that you know what you are talking about on your webpage. Yes credible information.

Will search engine penalize me for my external links?
No – good external links are great for your website – and the search engines will reward you for doing so. But you are taking a risk. If you like to spammy sites or link farms or paid links they will penalize you.

This is the reason you will have to be sure you are linking to the right places, the specialist, the technical people, and the white papers and so on.

If you have a website where people can comment on your pages (and yes it’s a great idea – to keep the page fresh) then you should be very careful which websites the comments are linking to.

The best way is often to moderate the comments and take away the URL in the comments – and also to make all comment a no-follow link. Also undisclosed paid advertising outbound links can reduce your website’s credibility.

Another issue is too many links on one page – this might confuses visitors. Google advises webmasters to have no more than 100 links per page.

One of my readers here reminded me about the landing page for a convert to sale page. This has to be clear and clean. No need to confuse the potential buyer in the last phase of a buying. And he is absolutely right.

And Google don’t really love exchanging any types of links – so stay away from that too :)…

So what about if I link to a low PageRank website?

Don’t worry about this.

But you are right – if you are linking to a website that has a lower PageRank than yours – you will lend them some credibility (link juice). And if the website you are linking to has a higher PageRank than yours you will not.

Google writes this on their own blog – “If you’re linking to content you believe your users will enjoy, then please don’t worry about the site’s perceived PageRank. As a webmaster, the things to be wary of regarding outbound links are listed above, such as losing credibility by linking to spammy sites. Otherwise, consider outbound links as a common sense way to provide more value to your users, not a complicated formula.”

I better make an external link here. So read more about external linking of Google’s own blog

Conclusion
Yes, yes, yes – use external links on your website and comments. Just remember to moderate your comments and make the comments no-follow links.

With external links you will get a higher credibility and you will see your readers again.

BacklinksWe all know it’s not easy getting our high quality backlinks.

The high quality backlinks are do-follow backlinks from pages which have content almost like ours.

You can get backlinks from a lot of social sites – like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn – but most of them are no-follow.

There are 2 groups that I advise all B2B companies to start getting backlinks from – Customers and suppliers. If you are a B2C company you can still get backlinks from suppliers’ websites.

So how do you get these backlinks?

Don’t just write them an e-mail asking them for a backlink – most of the time this will not work.

1. Start building your list of likely linkers – remember both groups

  • Ask a department head to help you with your list depending on the size of your company
  • Who are your happiest customers?
  • Where do you buy most of your parts for your product?
  • Do you have a testimonials page or case studies on your website
  • If you have an email club – give a shout for testimonials or case studies. A lot of customers would like to help you. This will help you get contact information to relevant persons/companies
  • Check also your companies customer database/CRM

2. Make the priority list

  • Check out the customer, supplies or vendors’ websites – who has the highest authority?
  • Use an SEO program to help you – like Market Samurai – find out more contact information (remember also the social networks like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn), how many Inbound and Outbound links, PageRank, MozRank, Domain Age.
  • You can also use a plugin for your browser to find this information

3. Ask for the link

  • Give them a good reason to link to you – don’t say please – give them an offer they cannot refuse
  • Where on their site do you want them to link to your site?
  • Do they have a testimonial or case list?
  • Do they have a blog or guest blog?
  • Offer them, that they can have an interview with somebody from your company
  • You can also ask for an interview with somebody from their company for your own website – it will show them as expert – and you could ask them to link to that page – maybe from their news section.
  • Most companies have a partner page – so ask to be mentioned on this page

4. Anchor text

  • When asking for a link – remember to suggest an anchor text. This way you will have your main keywords mention in their anchor text.

Conclusion

Start your link building with your customer and supplies. You have a chance to get relevant, high quality, do-follow backlinks.

Good luck with it. Carpe Diem.

juice

Links are very important for your ranking on Google. So you have to know about link juice. Link juice will make you beat your competitors. Because you dont what your competitor to beat you right?

So I will try to explain it very carefully what link juice really is.

Other sites would like to get some of your juice because then their sites will rank higher, and you should get some of the juice from other sites to higher your ranking on the web. So its all about getting the juice – you follow me?

So lets start with 2 sites. Site A and Site B. The 2 site is fighting about the ranking for the same keyword.

photoc

So to decide which one will get the highest ranking Google will look at the links to the two sites. Here site A get a link from site C – while site B doesn’t get any links. You can say C is giving some juice to site A. So site A will do best in the Google ranking.

photoc

Now both site A and site B get a link from site C. Their are sharing the juice. So they will rank on the same level. So to decide which one will get the highest rank Google will have to look at other normally not so important things  (See How you get into top10 of Google).

photoc

Now site A get another link from site D and site B get a link from E. So now Google has to decide – which one the two new sites are most important site D or site E. Who has most juice to give.

photod

Here you can see side D get much more juice then site E… so in the end site A will have the most juice.

photoc

And we all love juice right? This is really important guys… most of the ranking on search engines like Google is about getting links to your site.

Have fun out there … and remember to get your juice 🙂

facebook logo

People have asked me about Facebook. Almost every company has a Facebook page theses days. But how do you best use it for marketing? Well here is some guidelines for you all. Use them and it will work for you.

1. The name of the Facebook page title
It’s very important to get the right name of your Facebook page. If you choose a name like – cheap cars – some people would think of you as a spammer – and less people will want to share it with their friends. Also Facebook has recently been disabling updates for generically named pages. Therefor – use your company name as the name of the website. And stick to it

2. Select the best URL (Facebook username)
Facebook is showing your pages’s URL like this – www.facebook.com/yourUsernameHere. You can select a username at www.faceook.com/username. This is a very important SEO opportunity on Facebook so use this.

So it here you will use your keyword – or combine your name and your keyword. If you are selling used cars – your Facebook address could be www.facebook.com/UsedCars. Facebook has blacklisted some generic user names but there are a lot of possibilities.

By the way – your Facebook username/URL cannot be changed ever. So be careful when you pick it. And – you will need at least 100 fans before you can select a username. Do you have less than 100 fans you will have to wait.

3. About text box
Use the about text box to write keyword dense text near the top of your page.
You have a 250 character limit, so choose your words wisely. Search engines love keywords close to the top of your page.

4. Info tab
You can use the info tab to write much more about your company. And of course remember to use your keywords, text and links. Address, city, State, and Zip code are important for local searches. Company overview, mission and products are important for product searches. Include your website address. Also remember to pick the right category of your business.

5. Create extra boxes and tabs
Facebook allows page owners to create extra boxes and tabs where you can write any kind of static content – text, images and links. This can be a great way to boost the content density score of your page. Use them 🙂

You can use the Static FBML application to create more boxes or tabs to your Wall. Look up Static FBML application on Facebook.

6. Status updates with links
Google loves pages that link to relevant sites. So when you post a link to your website in a Facebook update – Google will love that. And when Google loves it we all do … right?

Remember you can write the URL link in the text – or you can attach the link.

7. Add photos with captions, events with descriptions, and a discussion forum
When you add photos in your use verbose and keyword dense descriptions. So take your extra time (1 min. to include text and keywords in the description field that you want to rank for.

When you are making events – yes again – make a description of it using your keywords.
And make a discussion forum for your page.

8. Inbound links and more fans
Use your normal website to get more links to your Facebook page. You can try to use the – Find us on Facebook – badge.
It’s pretty simple right? The more fans or likes – the more links to your Facebook page. The more links the higher ranking. It all works together.

So yes – you have to take your SEO glasses on when you are working with Facebook.

All the best to you all…

secretSo you wonder how Google calculates its ranking right?

Well here it is – it’s for you – and the best part is that it’s FREE.

Well I have to be honest to you – I don’t have it from Google. The percent is taken from a 72 SEOs surveyed for SEO moz’s biennial search ranking factors. But it’s getting very close to the real thing.

So lets run through the algorithm because it’s so very important to everything we are going to do with SEO.

First of all did you see that “Link Popularity of the specific page” and “Anchor Text of External Links to the Page” together makes up for around 42 percent of the ranking. Yes you read it right. That’s why link building is so important.

That’s why all the SEO people keep running around shouting about getting links to your page. And that’s why we will pay high attention on links and getting those backlinks. I will tell you much more about what to do later on.

Google Algorithme, Google Ranking

How Google calculates the ranking of websites

And did you also see the growing importance of social media. The links coming from social media are very important for the ranking. Here its over 5 percent. And that is also links. So over half of the ranking on Google is about links

On page keywords usages

Another interesting thing is the onpage keywords usages are only 15 percent of the ranking. So no matter how much effort you are doing to write your keywords into the text, make the picture tag making extra pages with the keyword – it only counts for 15 percent.

Of course 15 percent is a lot too – and if your keywords is not on the page you will have a problem. So we still have to work with the on page keywords.

Traffic and CTR data

And yes – traffic is important. Websites with a lot of traffic must be more important than websites without or with less traffic.

And the CTR (click through rate) it’s important. How many times are your website shown in searches compared to how many time people are clicking on your link.

That’s why you have to work with the meta description even though its not really important in the ranking – but make people curious so they just have to click on your link.

Well.. Now its time for some coffee..
