Link building is done for the sake of Google, since if you are doing it for the Bing/Yahoo alliance then they may as well join the rebel alliance and await a daring rescue by Ewoks. The tips you are about to read on this article are also for Google.
Google wants something to be useful
The buzzword for the decade is “useful” and Google are still on that useful trip. First your website had to be useful, then its content did, then your exterior content did, then your URLs did, then your anchor text, and now your backlinks have to be useful.
Google don’t seem to realize that we create websites because they are supposed to be useful for us. Still, Google now wants your backlinks to be useful. They are well aware that you create backlinks in order to improve your SEO (Search Engine Optimization), but now they are saying they are sick of people just putting backlinks anywhere and they want them in places where they are useful.
Create a long-term benefit from your backlinks
This is the cheesy carrot way for Google to say they want you to pander to your target audience instead of just anybody. The notion is fair enough, but they sound pretentious when they say it. They want you to create a backlink profile and they want you to have long term goals in mind. The long term goal should be to attract your target audience and yours alone.
The theme of the website linking to you does not matter as much
This is the snippet of information that had to be checked twice. Now Google are saying that the theme of the website you link from is of no consequence. No doubt some time in the future one of the engineers will post something clarifying the process.
One assumes that what they meant was that if you run a pork lovers website aimed at people who actually have souls, then it is okay if you link from a website about shoes, if that website happens to have a sub section on how bacon is simply delicious and how it makes you live longer despite Jewish propaganda that it does not.
So, do not take it as a swipe saying that the theme of the page you link from is not important. Take it as a sign that the overall theme does not matter but the pages you link from do.
Get links from authority sites
This is not a new thing. We all know it is better to get a link from a site that is established and well attended instead of from a new website that is scarcely attended at all.
Get links from websites in your niche
This is older school advice that is still relevant in the year 2014. It is better to get links from websites that have your niche audience in mind. It is more a matter of common sense in the same way you know that picking your teeth with a live parrot’s beak is not a great idea. If you can get links from websites that attract the same type of viewer as your website, then you are in a better position to attract said target audience. This also plays into the long-term backlink profile stuff too.
Use social media to gain attention
They don’t want you to do it for social media links because Google says they are not worth anything, but Google are friendly but vague so don’t trust that little snippet. They say you should use social media in order to draw attention to your content so that other people will willingly link to it. That way you get your links but you get them from people who are interested in your website (organically).
This concept has never really reconciled with real life. For example, if a fan of your gardening website decides to link from his website about matchboxes, then how does that help your SEO in any way? The most unpredictable backlinks are the ones that come from complete strangers and yet for years Google has said the organic links are the best ones.
Get backlinks from “real” sites
Yes, somebody in the Google stratosphere won 100 points in the game called “Google vague” by saying we should get links from real websites. Vagueness aside, the mind boggling way that the tip may be interpreted is enough to give a nun a nose bleed.
One can only assume that they meant get links from websites that have long term goals and are maintained instead of from websites that were content management system built in a day and that are soon to be forgotten until their domains expire.

The Hummingbird update is one of the biggest operational updates that Google has released in a long time. The trouble is that it is still very vague as to what effect this has on webmasters.
There has been a continuous effort by Google to ensure that only good quality, authoritative and relevant content rises to the top pages of the search engine and feathery and ornamental, keyword stuffed ones do not fool the search engine to get to the top ranks.
Google rolled out AgentRank way back in 2005 to weed out low quality and spammy content by using digital signatures. In 2011, it introduced Google+ followed by Google Authorship that allows linking the content that you produce to your Google+ profile. Google authorship has put the search engine giat closer to ensuring the trustworthiness and reliability of the results that appear on its top pages.
Google AuthorRank: A Better Way To Achieve A Higher Ranking In Search Engine
At the time of the launch of Google+ social network, most of the users of social networks were skeptical of its success and about its success in combating established networks like Facebook and Twitter. However, after a considerable time of its launch, we realize that it has started to carve out a niche for itself in social media circles.
One unique feature of Google+ is its system of authorship and ranking. An author can build a trust and rank for him/her. This rank is called Google Author Rank. Google already has a lot of ways to rate your content and it is continuously devising ways and means to better it. With the advent of Google+, the more +1s for your content send a strong signal that your content is of high quality, authoritative and that you deserve a better rank.
To get a better Author Rank, first thing that you will need to do is claim the authorship of your content. You can do this by linking all your content to your Google+ profile. If you have a Google+ profile, you can get the articles attributed to your name from any blog or website. Once you have set up Google Authorship correctly, you stand a bright chance of receiving benefits in the search engines results. Google rates articles with authorship markup better than ones without it and assigns a better rank to the author.
How will authors be ranked?
Google will have a system of various metrics in place to adjudge the quality and relevance of your website to the users. Since Page Rank techniques do remain valid, your basic SEO tools, targeting keywords and link creation remain as important. However, it is social media that will have a huge role to play in deciding the authority and significance of the author to his or her audience.
Here are a few parameters that will dictate your Google Author Rank:
1. Social activity and authority:
Your Google Author rank is dictated by all the +1s of Google+ content. Similarly, all that you do on other social networks also has a bearing on your Google Author Rank. It must be noted that both positive and negative comments have an effect on your rank.
2. Authoritative websites:
The more the number of authoritative websites that have your mention, the better it is for your Google Author Rankings. This has been so for long and is expected to remain the same in future.
Quality links to your site from legitimate and authoritative websites have a huge role to play in boosting your rank. The volume, consistency and the quality of inbound links to the author’s content will also be a major factor influencing rank.
Your Google Author Rank is also influenced by having your content on a website with higher page rank.
How Can Google Authorship Help Your Business?
The more authority you have on the internet, all the things associated with you will appear more legitimate. Say for example, Bill Gates authority on the internet is well known and if he blogs about your business or services, then its positive effects on your reputation need no elaboration. With better Google Author Rank, you raise the level of authority in your niche. With this, Google also starts considering you more relevant and legitimate thereby returning your reference in its search results, hence profiting your business.
As author of content on the internet, you need to be prepared for the considerable change that will be brought about by Google Author Rank. It will become imperative to have a team of right authors who can create captivating content in order to build a good rank rather than relying on Page Rank entirely.

First it was the Panda and now it is the Penguin update. The Google Penguin sets more stringent rules for any page that wishes to be ranked. The launch of the original Penguin resulted in tremendous confusion among SEO experts because the adjustments resulted in drastic falls in rankings.
With its latest update released earlier this year, Google Penguin 2.0 aims to track down websites that employ black-hat SEO techniques and eventually penalize them for it. So far, most SEO experts feel that the easiest way to survive these changes is by making your website more compelling and worth visiting over and over.
How to Survive Penguin 2.0
1. Focusing on Integrating Natural or Real Links
With the latest update in Google’s search algorithms, you must focus all your attention on integrating natural or real links. It is also important that you set real link parameters. Avoid buying and creating links from websites that are not related to yours.
Also, avoid building links that lead to your target page but are “spammy” in nature or come with little integrity. Also, it is best to keep your link optimization exercise under control by being conservative about the use of anchor texts and unnatural link-baiting. We will discuss this in more detail below.
2. Acquiring a Deeper Understanding of the Nature and Profile of your Website
If you are having a tough time accomplishing this on your own, make use of applications which help you in achieving brand integration. There are applications which help identify external pages which can be legitimately linked to your website. This can help you save time and assist in performing a quick analysis of the pages and domains that link back to your website.
You can also find applications that help detect low-quality links that have a negative impact on your page rankings. It is important that you perform regular clean-ups to get rid of all bad links.
3. Creating Valuable Relationships Online
No amount of link-buying can help you with creating meaningful relationships online. If you wish to survive Penguin 2.0, it is important that you develop partnerships with relevant sites that are known to offer quality content. One meaningful back-link is always more effective than ten that are irrelevant. Strategic online partnerships are a great way to fight all kinds of algorithmic changes. Even if more Penguins are introduced on the search engine, your valuable relationships are here to stay.
4. Removing the Spammy Pages from your Website
In addition to getting rid of external links that take you to spammy content, it is also important that you maintain a certain amount of vigilance with respect to internal cleaning of your own pages on a regular basis.
5. Implementing a New Campaign for Inbound Link-Building
Consider starting from scratch with respect to your link-building campaign. Associate with only those pages that have won Google’s trust. This can prove to be quite helpful in improving your search ranking.
In spite of all the confusion and chaos around Google’s Penguin 2.0, it is a fact that these updates come in good faith. It is the aim of Google to make sure that Internet users are able to gain access to high-quality content every time they log on. It is thus important that, as an online marketer, you play by the rules and focus on quality.
