Chain LinksSearch Engine Optimization (SEO) has evolved over the past few years along with the demands of people and introduction of new products or services. A few years back, you may have been building a whole directory of links within a short period of time.

Today, things are completely different, and you need to focus on a new set of metrics. Below are a few link-building tips that you should follow in 2013 for a successful SEO campaign.

Reduce the Number of Directory Links

Listing your links in a directory is always a tough task.

Additionally, the directory quality varies from site to site; so you may need to limit the amount of time you spend and prioritize your efforts.

Evaluate directory quality before you make the effort; the good ones will benefit you, but the others may actually harm your backlink portfolio.

Cut Down on Blog Comments

While commenting on blogs with links has proven to work well for some businesses, this year you may need to change your strategy.

Most blogs may not follow back and the links passed are no longer counted in the ranking algorithm.

You may continue this method with a few exclusive blogs and provide interesting comments linking back to your site, but it is best to limit this link-building method.

Rise of Guest Blogging

With last year’s Google algorithm updates, the online link value decreased, dropping the ranks of many sites in a short span of time.

With guest blogging, however, this may be solved.

The aim of guest blogging is to get your content, especially the backlinks, on to an external site, and connect it to your own.

A word of caution: You need to ensure that this guest content is interesting as well as at least 500 words long.

Separating Your Blog from Your Website

When you create a blog for your website, you may opt to go for an external one.

By having a separate blog gives you the opportunity to write unique, in-depth content that links back to your site.

However, it is necessary that you pay attention to the content on the site, too.

Along with these link-building ideas, you need to stick with the basics like applying organic and natural SEO, rather than choosing black-hat techniques.

Keep these in mind and you may rank higher on search engines this year.

DV1089014Link building is one of the most effective strategies that can help drive more traffic to your website which makes it more successful.

Most website owners take this lightly posting any links that they may find on their way which end up bringing negative results. To see positive results in 2013, some of the strategies that you can adapt include:

Create linkable assets
Content still remains king if you want to attract the right kind of links.

As many businesses turn to content marketing, coming up with top notch quality is one of the most effective ways that will help you stand out of the crowd. This should be the type of content that viewers will want to look at and end up linking to.

Some of the features that you should include in the content are: videos, info-graphics, online calculators, lists and useful widgets among many others.

Make sure you do your homework thoroughly to find the best ones to be included in your content. Study competition to find out what they are using to make the tick and come up with strategies that will help you become an industry leader.

Share
The secret to attracting more people to the site is to make sure that you share it wide enough. Ensure that all your friends as well as relatives know about the site and request them to tell other people they know. Social media can also be used as a platform for effective link building.

Create accounts on various platforms like Twitter and Facebook in order to penetrate into a new market. This way you will not miss a number of people who will be interested in what you do to get high quality links for your site.

Build healthy relationships
Look for interesting bloggers, journalists and free-lance writers who come up with top notch sites and create healthy and strong relationships.

This can help you find loyal customers for your business as word of mouth is something very valuable and you cannot put a price on it.

This is a proven method of natural link building where you can get free links that will help your business at the end of the day.

Don’t restrict yourself to bloggers who write things that are related to your site as it is also recommended that you look for the ones with most reach and influence.

Take time to find individuals who are well connected, write on various blogs as well as industry news sites and have achieved a large following of real and not fake people on social media.

Develop link resource database
One of the most common problems that organizations face when working with multiple link builders is assisting people in discovering new methods of connecting with effective link building opportunities.

If you are working with different link builders they are supposed to consult with each other to find the perfect solution for you.

It is important to avoid the ones that use the same resources for all their customers as this will obviously not work as Google will discover sooner or later what you are up to.

AuthorMost webmasters around the world would accept that the whole process of search engine optimization (SEO) is largely skewed towards complying with Google and its web policies.

This is primarily due to the fact that Google has become a supreme power that rules the web, prevailing from search listings to online advertising services, and many more.

Every action that Google executes reverberates across the online world, which is a testament to its dominance in the space. But one cannot undermine the fact that Google’s actions are taken with only two things in consideration, to appease its loyal user base and cement its stature as a quality service provider.

A recent development from Google is its ‘Authorship’ identity, which according to it enhances writer identity and minimizes spam activities.

In the SEO arena, the manner in which Google has created and sustained author tags in HTML and its usage has generated a lot of popularity and interest in the writers circle, mainly because it permits them to tag their work thereby providing insights to the reader about the writer and also reflecting legitimate work.

In today’s age of the paramount importance of the internet branding business, content development is at the forefront of all the activities conducted in a web-oriented business.

When a writer is instrumental in creating blogs or any other form of web content, author tags is an assured route to gaining acknowledgement and credibility in this revolutionary internet marketing trend.

Google is playing a crucial role here as it permits authors to associate their online content to their profile on Google Plus.

Your badge can include your particulars such as your name and preferably also a picture of yourself. Details such as these enable an element of authenticity, connection and readability with the writer and his content.

Also if someone is particularly interested in your kind of writing you could get added to their circle on Google+. This will enable them to simply read more of your work no matter where they have been sighted and also serve as a positive personal branding mechanism.

This complete sequence can osculate into an incontestable medium for SEO.

The purpose of author tags

The entire purpose of author tags is that the work that you have done which is all over the internet now has a profile, thereby enabling global visibility.

So even if you are a writer that does not write very often, you could still include the tag to your name within the content. For the few or many who wonder how to include these tags on your content is in reality a relatively simple process.

Once a writer is done writing on any topic that excites them, they can add then include their unique attributes in a link that will be redirected to their profile. Some of the primitive writing that you may have done also gets the author tag.

Content authentication has been a service that creative writers and authors alike have been longing for. In the age that we are in anyone is capable of falsely claiming that a particular article is their original piece of work and some of the stalwarts in journalism have indulged in such acts, leave alone the ones striving to carve a unique identity by penning their thoughts and views.

Given this crude reality, this new rage called an author tag serves to authenticate your work, build your individual brand, enhance your reputation online and help you penetrate global markets.

This new phenomenon that continues to cause ripples is easy to establish and with Google backing it, you can be rest assured!!

LinkBuildingWhen you are building links for your website, it’s extremely important that you utilize some of the features that SEO tools have to provide.

For instance, a lot of SEO tools today allow you to build multiple tiers of links for your link building campaigns.

Today, Google’s algorithm is extremely complex and in order to stay at the top of the search engines, you have to use link building strategies that are going to be effective.

Building multiple tiers of links is a great way to do this. On the top tier, you should have your highest quality links, linking directly to your money site. These links should be high in page rank and they should pack as much value as possible.

You should also be using unique content for these links, since spun content would likely get flagged and possibly removed at the website that you posted it on.

By using spun content that doesn’t read well for first-tier links, your content will probably get noticed on the site eventually and taken down. This would leave your site vulnerable to the unnatural link penalty that Google often penalizes websites for when they have links that continuously go down.

On your second and third tier links, you don’t have to be nearly as careful. On these tiers, you should be building links in volume and the quality of the links does not have to be as high quality as it was with your first tier.

Below you’ll find some things that you can do to build multiple tiers of links in an effective way, so that your search engine optimization campaign will be successful.

Focus on high PR links on tier 1
A good way to focus on building higher-quality links for your tier 1 link building efforts, would be to only build links on high page rank domains.

Pagerank always has been and still is today a good way to determine the value of the website. As a website ages and develops backlinks and search engine rankings, its PR will increase.

Therefore, you can use page rank as a conclusive determinant for the value of that website. Web sites that have a page rank of at least three are considered to be fairly valuable.

They should have a good amount of backlinks, possible search engine rankings and the age of the domain should at least be older than a year. You can experiment with these factors yourself by researching into the backlink count and the age of the domains that you find with high PR.

Quality is still important in tier 2
Tier 2 links don’t have to be an entirely high page rank, but you still need to retain a high level of quality among these links.

Your tier 2 links are directly going to affect your tier 1 links, which will affect your money site. If you build high-quality links on tier 2, you may increase the search engine rankings of your tier 1 links, which will be very beneficial to your money site.

Tier 3
Tier 3 links are where you can build links in mass numbers, without having to really worry about the quality. You can use software like Scrapebox to do blog comments, XRumer for forum profiles or you can even make use of social bookmarks, web 2.0’s, wiki sites and lots of other types of free submission platforms.

DisavowLinksGoogle ramped up its fight against spam by releasing its new Disavow Links tool.

Announced at the Las Vegas Pubcon convention, this new tool allows webmasters – those that have a Google Webmasters Account – to report and possibly get rid of bad or spammy links to their website, links that could be hurting their SEO rankings.

These links are reviewed by Google and, if found to be spam, could face removal from Google search results.

While Google recommends the use of Disavow Links only in last-resort situations, it could do a lot to improve the web as a whole, cutting down on bad SEO practices, improving search results for users and helping webmasters improve their own organic search rankings.

What it is

The Disavow Links tool is essentially a reporting system for bad URLs and links. Essentially, webmasters are able to submit a list of links to their site that they believe are spam, unnatural, disreputable or otherwise bad, and Google will consider removing  them from search results. Typically, removing bad links will take at least a few weeks.

The tool is intended to be the final straw in a webmasters’ attempt to have a bad link removed. Google recommends contacting the webmaster of the spam link’s domain to request removal before using the Disavow Links tool.

Disavow Links was likely created in response to Google’s latest Penguin algorithm update which, instead of turning its head to bad or spammy links when determining a site’s search ranking, actually uses those links as a strike against the site.

Why to use it

Many websites have been hurt by the Penguin update. Past link building campaigns may have resulted in a number of URLs and links that now hurt, rather than help, the site’s ranking in Google. The Disavow Links tool offers a road to a clean slate for those websites.

Whether the links were the result of a bad SEO practitioner on behalf of the site itself, or if they were paid links, the Disavow Links tool can help remove those is webmasters are unable to leverage the removal themselves.

The tool can also help if webmasters believe someone may be creating negative SEO against them, either to hurt a business or to direct traffic away to another site.

Additionally, Disavow Links can help clean up a site’s image in search results. Users will no longer see confusing or spam-related links when searching, links that could affect their view of the site or its reputation.

How to use it

To use the Disavow Links tool, you first must have a Google Webmasters account.

From there, you’ll need to select your website and upload a text file. The file should list each individual URL you’d like to see removed or investigated on a separate line – no commas, or semicolons.

If you’d like to have a whole domain removed, you simply need to use “domain:XX.com,” instead of a direct URL.

According to Google, it could be a number of weeks before links are removed and, even then, there’s no guarantee they will be. Google reserves the right to use its own judgment in removing links from search results.

Google representatives say it’s important to be careful when using the Disavow Links tool. Accidentally disavowing an important link to your site could severely affect site health and, while the links can be reinstated upon request, it could take another few weeks for the process to be complete.

ExternalLinkingWhen SEO people are talking about links – most of the time they will talk about backlinks. But you can also use your external links to improve your site.

So what are external links? Its links from your website that links outside your own domain to other websites on the internet.

Some people are afraid of using them.

They think “if people click away from my website I will never see them again – so I better not link to an outside domain”.

Other people are thinking “what if the website I am linking to is a spammy or bad website – then I might be punished by the search engines”.

And you will also find people that have the idea that “I should never link to a website that has a lower PageRank than mine”.

With external links you will provide your readers with in-depth information about the topic you are writing about. You can also write your own unique commentary on existing resources.

But if I Use External Linking I will Never See the Reader Again
Well you will have to rethink if you are among these people. When you are using external links you will provide your readers with a lot of information and references and this will show to the reader that your site has credible information.

And we all know that a credible website is a website that the readers will return to in the future to get more information – right?

What is the alternative for the reader?

Well if the reader doesn’t find the information he or she needs on your website – the person will just go on Google, Bing or Yahoo and find the wanted information elsewhere. So when not help your reader with credible information.

You don’t have to link to your competitors – even though the reader might find them anyway.

You can start by linking to great technical people, scientists’ people, bibliographies, Wikipedia, white papers, journal entries.

When you link to websites like these it will show that you know your product or business. And that you know what you are talking about on your webpage. Yes credible information.

Will search engine penalize me for my external links?
No – good external links are great for your website – and the search engines will reward you for doing so. But you are taking a risk. If you like to spammy sites or link farms or paid links they will penalize you.

This is the reason you will have to be sure you are linking to the right places, the specialist, the technical people, and the white papers and so on.

If you have a website where people can comment on your pages (and yes it’s a great idea – to keep the page fresh) then you should be very careful which websites the comments are linking to.

The best way is often to moderate the comments and take away the URL in the comments – and also to make all comment a no-follow link. Also undisclosed paid advertising outbound links can reduce your website’s credibility.

Another issue is too many links on one page – this might confuses visitors. Google advises webmasters to have no more than 100 links per page.

One of my readers here reminded me about the landing page for a convert to sale page. This has to be clear and clean. No need to confuse the potential buyer in the last phase of a buying. And he is absolutely right.

And Google don’t really love exchanging any types of links – so stay away from that too :)…

So what about if I link to a low PageRank website?

Don’t worry about this.

But you are right – if you are linking to a website that has a lower PageRank than yours – you will lend them some credibility (link juice). And if the website you are linking to has a higher PageRank than yours you will not.

Google writes this on their own blog – “If you’re linking to content you believe your users will enjoy, then please don’t worry about the site’s perceived PageRank. As a webmaster, the things to be wary of regarding outbound links are listed above, such as losing credibility by linking to spammy sites. Otherwise, consider outbound links as a common sense way to provide more value to your users, not a complicated formula.”

I better make an external link here. So read more about external linking of Google’s own blog

Conclusion
Yes, yes, yes – use external links on your website and comments. Just remember to moderate your comments and make the comments no-follow links.

With external links you will get a higher credibility and you will see your readers again.

BacklinksWe all know it’s not easy getting our high quality backlinks.

The high quality backlinks are do-follow backlinks from pages which have content almost like ours.

You can get backlinks from a lot of social sites – like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn – but most of them are no-follow.

There are 2 groups that I advise all B2B companies to start getting backlinks from – Customers and suppliers. If you are a B2C company you can still get backlinks from suppliers’ websites.

So how do you get these backlinks?

Don’t just write them an e-mail asking them for a backlink – most of the time this will not work.

1. Start building your list of likely linkers – remember both groups

  • Ask a department head to help you with your list depending on the size of your company
  • Who are your happiest customers?
  • Where do you buy most of your parts for your product?
  • Do you have a testimonials page or case studies on your website
  • If you have an email club – give a shout for testimonials or case studies. A lot of customers would like to help you. This will help you get contact information to relevant persons/companies
  • Check also your companies customer database/CRM

2. Make the priority list

  • Check out the customer, supplies or vendors’ websites – who has the highest authority?
  • Use an SEO program to help you – like Market Samurai – find out more contact information (remember also the social networks like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn), how many Inbound and Outbound links, PageRank, MozRank, Domain Age.
  • You can also use a plugin for your browser to find this information

3. Ask for the link

  • Give them a good reason to link to you – don’t say please – give them an offer they cannot refuse
  • Where on their site do you want them to link to your site?
  • Do they have a testimonial or case list?
  • Do they have a blog or guest blog?
  • Offer them, that they can have an interview with somebody from your company
  • You can also ask for an interview with somebody from their company for your own website – it will show them as expert – and you could ask them to link to that page – maybe from their news section.
  • Most companies have a partner page – so ask to be mentioned on this page

4. Anchor text

  • When asking for a link – remember to suggest an anchor text. This way you will have your main keywords mention in their anchor text.

Conclusion

Start your link building with your customer and supplies. You have a chance to get relevant, high quality, do-follow backlinks.

juice

Links are very important for your ranking on Google. So you have to know about link juice. Link juice will make you beat your competitors. Because you dont what your competitor to beat you right?

So I will try to explain it very carefully what link juice really is.

Other sites would like to get some of your juice because then their sites will rank higher, and you should get some of the juice from other sites to higher your ranking on the web. So its all about getting the juice – you follow me?

So lets start with 2 sites. Site A and Site B. The 2 site is fighting about the ranking for the same keyword.

photoc

So to decide which one will get the highest ranking Google will look at the links to the two sites. Here site A get a link from site C – while site B doesn’t get any links. You can say C is giving some juice to site A. So site A will do best in the Google ranking.

photoc

Now both site A and site B get a link from site C. Their are sharing the juice. So they will rank on the same level. So to decide which one will get the highest rank Google will have to look at other normally not so important things  (See How you get into top10 of Google).

photoc

Now site A get another link from site D and site B get a link from E. So now Google has to decide – which one the two new sites are most important site D or site E. Who has most juice to give.

photod

Here you can see side D get much more juice then site E… so in the end site A will have the most juice.

photoc

And we all love juice right? This is really important guys… most of the ranking on search engines like Google is about getting links to your site.

Have fun out there … and remember to get your juice 🙂

7 reasons for social media or …… what to tell your boss

Perhaps you know the situation?

You want your company to use facebook or twitter, but the CEO or marketing manager thinks that social media is a waste of time.

“Why should we waste time and money on Facebook? We don’t have time to keep up with what customers are saying. We do not have time to respond to blogs.”

Hmmm .. I’ve heard this many times.

Let me tell you a secret – which is not really a secret. Social media is here to stay. And you might as well start to use them. Remember when marketers thought about the internet in the 90s –  just something for IT freaks? .

And here is another secret – within very very short time, the website as we know it today is gone. Users will have the rights to comment on what they read and see. This is like going from print to web.

eMarketer expects in 2010 that BtB industry spending will increase by 60 percent. Okay – your bossis still screaming ?

Well here are 7 good reasons for companies to be on social media.

  1. We all want to involve our customer in our company and products. To involve customers we have to get a dialogue with the customer right? Could you imagine that you involve yourself privately with someone with an one-way dialogue? No. Involvement requires dialogue. Social media is dialogue.
  2. “We do not have time to read what it says on our blog and Facebook”. Wow – I’ll tell you a secret. Those who write to you on your blog are either customers or potential customers. They have taken their time to write to you. Don’t you have the time for customers?
  3. Maybe they write negative things about your company and you don’t know what to do about that. Well whether you have a blog or your customers may comment on your pages – they will write about you. Maybe on their private blogs or Facebook. When customers comment on your page you can enter into dialogue with customers and heard some negative things too. But hey – the customers can actually point out important problems which must be addressed.
  4. The cost to get started with social media is low. It is free to open a Facebook page, a twitter account, etc. The biggest cost is the time consumption afterwards.
  5. Most companies writes in their strategy that they wanna be  leading, innovative, dynamic – well now is your chance there.
  6. Social media is a whole new channel in your marketing portfolio. And yes you need it –  some of your competitors are using it so you will have to use it too – or loose customers to your competitors.
  7. You can dramatically increase traffic on your website using social media. The importents of links are very very high in seaches such as Google. With social media you can spread your links out and get many backlinks to your website. Your boss knows that traffic is money?

Social media is not only Facebook and twitter. Social media could be..

Microblogging (Twitter)
Photo sharing (Flickr)
Video sharing (YouTube)
Social bookmarking (Digg)
Wikis (Wikipedia)
Podcasts (iTunes)
Social communities (Facebook, MySpace)

So kick your boss in the ass and lets get this going ..

Yours
Henrik
